Image Details

What appears to be craggy mountains on a moonlit evening is the edge of a young, star-forming region called NGC 3324 in the Carina Nebula. Captured by NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope using infrared light, this image reveals previously hidden areas of star birth. Known as the Cosmic Cliffs, this region marks the edge of a massive gaseous cavity within NGC 3324, located approximately 7,600 light-years away. The intense ultraviolet radiation and stellar winds from hot, young stars at the centre of the bubble have sculpted this cavernous area. NIRCam’s high sensitivity unveils hundreds of previously obscured stars and background galaxies. Notable features include “steam” rising from the celestial “mountains” (actually ionized gas and dust), dramatic pillars resisting ultraviolet radiation, blown bubbles and cavities from newborn stars, and protostellar jets shooting from nascent stars. This rare event of early star formation is chronicled by Webb’s exquisite spatial resolution.
