CEERS

The panoramic vista, known as the Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science (CEERS) Survey, reveals a breathtaking cosmic landscape. Stitched together from multiple near-infrared images, it pulsates with activity. To the right of centre, bright white spiral galaxies twist into one another. Light pink spirals resemble pinwheels. Foreground stars, set off in blue, feature Webb’s eight pointed diffraction spikes. In the bottom row, a misshapen blue galaxy adorned with blue and pink star clusters stands out. These galaxies, unseen in other images, were first revealed by Webb. Some tiny, red dots in the survey’s expanse have travelled over 13 billion years to reach the telescope. Follow up spectra led to the discovery of the most distant active supermassive black hole known, along with two others from when the universe was just 1 billion years old. Eleven of the galaxies existed when the universe was only 470 to 675 million years old.
