Description

Image Details

This captivating image, captured by NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope’s Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam), showcases the central region of the Chamaeleon I dark molecular cloud, situated 630 light years away. The cloud material, depicted in blue at the centre, appears cold and wispy. Illuminated by the infrared glow of the young, outflowing protostar Ced 110 IRS 4 (seen in orange at the upper left), the cloud reveals its intricate structure. Behind the cloud, numerous background stars appear as orange dots. These stars light passes through the cloud, allowing astronomers to detect ices within it. An international team of researchers has made a significant discovery: diverse ices exist in the darkest regions of this cold molecular cloud. These pre-stellar molecules provide insights into the building blocks of future exoplanets and shed light on the origin of more complex molecules essential for life’s creation.
