Description
Image Details
NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has focused its gaze on the Crab Nebula, a supernova remnant located 6,500 light-years away in the constellation Taurus. Using Webb’s NIRCam (Near-Infrared Camera) and MIRI (Mid-Infrared Instrument), astronomers have unveiled never before seen details in infrared light. The remnant’s cage like structure of fluffy red-orange filaments represents doubly ionized sulphur. Within the remnant, yellow-white and green fluffy ridges form large scale loop like structures where dust particles reside. The interior contains translucent, milky material, emitting synchrotron radiation. This radiation arises from charged particles moving at high speeds along magnetic field lines. Trace the synchrotron radiation throughout the majority of the Crab Nebula’s interior and look for rippled wisps and a bright white dot at the centre. This is a rapidly rotating neutron star. Further out, follow thin white ribbons of radiation, mimicking the pulsar’s magnetic field. Some gas filaments appear bluer, containing singly ionized iron.
