The Webb Space Telescope’s NIRCam infrared image of the galaxy cluster El Gordo provides a captivating view of hundreds of galaxies. El Gordo (nicknamed “The Fat One”) acts as a gravitational lens, bending and amplifying light from distant background galaxies. Notably, the image highlights two distinct features: the Thin One, positioned just below and to the left of the centre, and the Fishhook, a striking red swoosh in the upper right corner. Both of these features are lensed background galaxies, offering a glimpse into the cosmic dance of light and gravity.
