Image Details

NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has captured a remarkable view of Herbig-Haro 211, a bipolar jet racing through interstellar space at supersonic speeds. Located approximately 1,000 light-years away in the constellation Perseus, it represents an infantile analogue of our Sun when it was only a few tens of thousands of years old and had a mass just 8% of its present day size. These Herbig-Haro objects form when stellar winds or gas jets from newborn stars collide with nearby gas and dust, creating shock waves. The image reveals a series of bow shocks in the lower left and upper right, along with a narrow bipolar jet that propels them. Molecules, including molecular hydrogen, carbon monoxide and silicon monoxide emit infrared light, allowing Webb to map out the structure of the outflows. This unprecedented view provides roughly 5 to 10 times higher spatial resolution than previous images, showcasing intricate details of the inner jet’s mirror-symmetric wiggling. Researchers speculate that Herbig-Haro 211 may even be an unresolved binary star.
