Description

Image Details

The infrared image captured by NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is part of the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey (JADES) program. It focuses on an area of the sky known as GOODS-South, which has been extensively studied by the Hubble Space Telescope and other observatories. In this image, over 45,000 galaxies are visible. Notably, the JADES team discovered hundreds of galaxies that existed when the universe was less than 600 million years old. This is a surprising finding that exceeded predictions based on pre-Webb observations. Additionally, the image reveals galaxies from the Epoch of Reionization, a period when the universe transitioned from being opaque to transparent. Many of these galaxies exhibit unusually strong emission line signatures due to the formation of numerous hot, massive stars.
