Description

Image Details

The panchromatic view of galaxy cluster MACS 0416 combines infrared observations from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope with visible light data from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. By colour coding the shortest wavelengths as blue, the longest as red, and intermediate wavelengths as green, the resulting image reveals a vibrant landscape of galaxies. MACS 0416, located about 4.3 billion light-years from Earth, magnifies light from distant background galaxies through gravitational lensing. Scientists have identified magnified supernovae and highly magnified individual stars. The bluest galaxies (detected by Hubble) are relatively nearby and exhibit intense star formation, while redder galaxies (detected by Webb) tend to be more distant or contain significant dust. This composite image showcases the combined power of both space telescopes, capturing a wealth of cosmic details.

C-type
