Description

Image Details

NGC 346, captured by NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam), resides within a nebula located 200,000 light years away. Webb’s observations reveal an abundance of building blocks for stars and planets, in the form of dust and hydrogen packed clouds. The gas plumes and arcs exhibit two types of hydrogen: pink represents energized hydrogen at temperatures around 10,000 °C, while orange signifies dense molecular hydrogen at much colder temperatures around -200 °C. This cold gas provides an ideal environment for star formation, and as stars emerge, they transform their surroundings. The resulting ridges throughout the region are evidence of this process, as the light from young stars breaks down the dense clouds. Notably, the numerous glowing gas pillars illustrate the effects of stellar erosion in this dynamic area.
