Description
Image Details
The image captured by NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope’s Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) showcases star-forming region NGC 604. Stellar winds from bright, hot young stars sculpt cavities in the surrounding gas and dust. The bright orange streaks represent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), carbon-based molecules. As we move away from the immediate dust cavities where the star forms, the deeper red hues indicate molecular hydrogen; this is a cooler gas that fosters star formation. Ultraviolet-ionized hydrogen appears as a ghostly white and blue glow. NGC 604, situated in the Triangulum galaxy (M33), lies 2.73 million light-years from Earth, offering astronomers a chance to study a concentration of very young, massive stars in a nearby region.
