Pandora's Cluster

Astronomers estimate that approximately 50,000 sources of near-infrared light are represented in this image. These sources have travelled varying distances to reach the telescope’s detectors, showcasing the vastness of space in a single frame. Notably, a foreground star in our galaxy displays Webb’s distinctive diffraction spikes. The bright white sources surrounded by a hazy glow are galaxies within Pandora’s Cluster. The gravitational lensing effect caused by the cluster’s mass warps spacetime, allowing astronomers to observe very distant sources of light beyond the cluster. These lensed sources appear red and often as elongated arcs, representing galaxies from the early universe. Some red sources remain unconfirmed, including an intriguing tiny red dot that could potentially be a supermassive black hole.
