Pillars Of Creation

In this near-infrared view, the iconic Pillars of Creation appear as arches and spires rising from a desert like landscape. These pillars are filled with semi-transparent gas and dust, constantly changing. The focus is on newly formed stars, bright red orbs occasionally accompanied by eight diffraction spikes. As knots of sufficient mass form within the pillars, they collapse under gravity, heat up, and begin shining brightly. Along the edges of the pillars, wavy lines resembling lava result from ejections by stars still in formation. These young stars periodically emit supersonic jets that interact within the dense gas and dust. Webb’s view will enhance star formation models by pinpointing precise star populations and assessing gas and dust quantities. The Pillars of Creation reside within the vast Eagle Nebula, 6,500 light-years away.
