Description
Image Details
Between the Pisces and Andromeda constellations, this view reveals over 20,000 galaxies. Quasar J0100+2802 is the pink object with diffraction spikes at the centre of the image. Researchers used this image to study 117 galaxies that existed approximately 900 million years after the big bang. The galaxies, composed of billions of stars, ionize the surrounding gas, transforming it into transparent regions. This occurred just before the end of the Era of Reionization, a period marked by significant changes in the universe. Webb’s measurements show that galaxies have fully ionized gas within a 2 million light-year radius, akin to hot air balloons clearing space. Over time, these bubbles merged, rendering the entire universe transparent.
