Image Details
The first anniversary image from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope reveals star birth in unprecedented detail. Focusing on the Rho Ophiuchi cloud complex (the nearest star-forming region to Earth) the image captures chaotic jets erupting from young stars, intersecting the surrounding interstellar gas and illuminating molecular hydrogen (depicted in red). Some stars cast shadows of circumstellar disks, the building blocks of future planetary systems. These young stars, similar in mass to the Sun or smaller, dominate the image. The large star S1 stands out in the lower half of the image, where it is carving out a glowing area with its stellar winds. The lighter coloured gas around S1 consists of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, common carbon-based molecules found throughout space.
