The James Webb Space Telescope’s unprecedented view of the Ring Nebula reveals intricate details. Formed by a dying star shedding its outer layers, this planetary nebula (also known as M57 and NGC 6720) lies approximately 2,500 light-years from Earth. The NIRCam image showcases filament structures within the inner ring, while the nebula contains around 20,000 dense globules rich in molecular hydrogen. The inner region exhibits very hot gas, and the main shell features a thin ring of enhanced emission from carbon-based molecules (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons). Additionally, ten concentric arcs beyond the outer edge likely result from interactions between the central star and a low-mass companion. These nebulae provide insights into cosmic history, akin to astronomical archaeology.
