Image Details
In this near-infrared image captured by NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope, thousands of galaxies flood the scene within galaxy cluster SMACS 0723. High resolution imaging, combined with gravitational lensing, reveals intricate details. The bright white elliptical galaxy at the centre, along with smaller white galaxies throughout, acts as a cosmic lens, bending light from distant galaxies behind them. Mirrored images of individual galaxies appear in orange arcs flanking the brightest cluster galaxy. Some galaxies are stretched or scattered due to interactions. The farthest galaxies in this scene (the smallest galaxies that are located well behind the cluster) look nothing like the spiral and elliptical galaxies observed in the local universe. They are much clumpier and more irregular in shape.
