Stephan's Quintet

The enormous mosaic of Stephan’s Quintet, captured by NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope, covers about one-fifth of the Moon’s diameter. Constructed from nearly 1,000 separate image files, it boasts over 150 million pixels. This visual grouping of five galaxies showcases never before seen details. Sparkling clusters of young stars and starburst regions grace the image, while sweeping tails of gas, dust, and stars are pulled from several galaxies due to gravitational interactions. Most strikingly, Webb’s MIRI instrument captures shock waves as NGC 7318B smashes through the cluster. The red and gold regions surrounding the central pair of galaxies reveal hot dust and structure. Stephan’s Quintet, also known as Hickson Compact Group 92 (HCG 92), provides a unique opportunity to study galaxy interactions and star formation processes. NGC 7319 harbours an active galactic nucleus, and even the leftmost galaxy, NGC 7320, shows individual stars and its bright core.
