On June 20th 2013 the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) captured this image of a solar flare on the left side of the sun, along with an eruption of solar material shooting through the sun's atmosphere (known as a prominence eruption). Shortly afterward, the same region of the sun released a coronal mass ejection (CME) towards the Earth. A CME is a solar phenomenon that propels billions of tons of particles into space and can cause geomagnetic storms here on Earth.
