In this mosaic image spanning 340 light-years, NASA’s Webb Telescope’s Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) unveils the Tarantula Nebula star-forming region in unprecedented detail. Tens of thousands of previously hidden young stars emerge from cosmic dust. The most active area sparkles with massive, pale blue stars, while still embedded red stars remain cocooned in the nebula. NIRCam’s resolution at near-infrared wavelengths reveals these dust shrouded stars. An older star in the centre, marked by eight diffraction spikes, points to a distinctive bubble within the nebula. Young stars, still surrounded by dust, carve out their own cavities. Cooler, rust coloured gas further from the core hints at complex hydrocarbons. This is material that is destined for future star formation. Gravity shapes this dynamic region, sweeping away gas and dust to form new stars.
